Svensk Biogas to supply LBG to Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery

In Sweden, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB and Svensk Biogas AB have signed an agreement whereby Svensk Biogas will begin deliveries of liquefied biogas (LBG) to Siemens facility in Finspång starting January 1, 2020.

A subsidiary of Germany-headed global technology major Siemens AG, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB, manufactures gas turbines at its facility in Finspång. When tested, these turbines run on liquid natural gas (LNG).

As of January 1, 2020, some of the natural gas will be replaced by biogas (LBG) in a development project.

Fuel flexibility is an important part of the global energy conversion and something that we at Siemens have been working on for many years. Our gas turbines can already be run on biogas and also hydrogen gas in addition to natural gas. With this agreement, we take the first step in order to be able to change our own test activities to renewable fuels as part of our internal sustainability work within production, said Hans Holmström, CEO of Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB.

The biogas will be supplied by Svensk Biogas, a subsidiary of municipal energy utility Tekniska verken i Linköping AB and will be produced at Tekniska verken’s new production facility for liquefied biogas in Linköping.

Cooperation with Siemens is another important step in Tekniska verkens vision that, together with our customers, we build the world’s most resource-efficient region. The investment in our new production facility means that we can now offer liquid biogas to the industry as well as to heavy transport and buses in the future. Liquid biogas is a very good fossil-free fuel that is also locally produced, and we, therefore, see that it will be a key in the region’s transition to fossil-free alternatives, both in terms of industry and transport, said Anna Lövsén, CEO of Svensk Biogas.
