Valmet to supply automation to UK waste-to-energy project

Finland-headed forest industry and energy technology provider Valmet Oyj has announced that it will supply automation to enfinium’s energy-from-waste (EfW) project located at Kelvin Way in Sandwell and Dudley in the UK.

The order, the value of which has not been disclosed, was placed by Acciona, the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for this 44 MWe (gross) facility.

Valmet’s delivery consists of a Valmet DNA Automation System, a protection system, integrated controls for 11 kV distribution, large screens, an extensive Valmet DNA User Interface for the control room, an electrical control system, more than 4 000 hardwired signals as well as more than 7 500 links and data points.

Once fully operational, enfinium Kelvin Ltd will be capable of processing up to 395 000 tonnes of non-recyclable household and business waste per annum.

The automation system will be taken over by the end customer in September 2025.

The end customer has been satisfied with our Valmet DNA system at the Parc Adfer, Kemsley, and Ferrybridge waste-to-energy sites delivered in 2018 and 2015. Our agility and flexibility to deal with Acciona were key success factors in securing the new order. For Valmet, this project is important as it further expands our market share in the UK energy-from-waste market, said Henar Martinez, Sales Manager, Energy Process Systems, Automation Systems, Valmet.
