Indaver and SUEZ to build energy-from-waste plant in Belgium

European waste management company Indaver NV and global waste and water management company SUEZ Groupe SAS (SUEZ) have teamed up to build a treatment facility for non-recyclable wood waste in Doel, Port of Antwerp, Belgium. To be operated under a joint venture E-Wood Energiecentrale NV (E-Wood), the plant will transform residual wood waste into renewable energy and will help to develop the activities in this area, in line with the Flemish region’s sustainable development goals.

Indaver NV and SUEZ Groupe SAS (SUEZ) have formed a joint venture E-Wood Energiecentrale NV (E-Wood) to build an energy-from-waste (EfW) facility for non-recyclable wood waste in Doel, Port of Antwerp, Belgium. The proposed 20 MWe power plant will supply excess steam into the recently opened ECLUSE steam network (photo courtesy Indaver).

To be located on the Indaver site in Waasland industrial port, the future plant will use the existing infrastructure, operated by both parties, which includes three turbines with a total generating capacity of 85 MW and a high-pressure process steam network with a generating capacity of 160 MW.

Waste is not an end product. It is a phase in the lifecycle of material. With E-Wood, we recover energy from wood waste. This project is an example of the industry’s sustained commitment to help achieve climate objectives, said Paul De Bruycker, CEO of Indaver.

E-Wood will have an annual processing capacity of 180 000 tonnes of non-recyclable wood waste such as treated or rotting wood and woody matter from composting facilities. The waste material will come from Belgium and the neighbouring countries Netherlands, Germany, and France.

Steam to ECLUSE district network

The plant will generate 20 MW of electricity. The remaining steam can be supplied to ECLUSE, the very first large-scale industrial steam network at the Port of Antwerp that has recently begun operations.

This project will create opportunities for economic development in this area and will provide local businesses and industries with a readily available, reliable, and sustainable energy source. It will also reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to European renewable energy targets.

The license application has been submitted and assuming regulatory approval, the facility could be operational in 2021.

We are proud to be involved in this project, which will contribute to the development of Antwerp’s port and provide its players with a local, low carbon and affordable energy resource. With E-Wood, the Group will boost its Energy-from-Waste capacity and will confirm its role as a major energy recovery producer said Jean-Marc Boursier, Group Senior Executive VP – Finance & Northern Europe.
