In Finland, customers of Gasum's filling stations have almost exclusively been buying biomethane (aka renewable natural gas - RNG) for some time. Natural gas sales will end at filling stations nationwide by August 30, 2024.
From the end of this summer, only renewable natural gas (RNG) will be distributed at Gasum’s gas filling stations in Finland. This means that Gasum’s Finnish filling stations will no longer offer the option to fill up with natural gas.
Almost all of Gasum’s Finnish filling station customers have been choosing biomethane for a couple of years now, as the price has been competitive compared to natural gas.
Today, the availability of RNG is so good that it is no longer necessary to keep natural gas as a backup alternative at stations.
We have invested in increasing the availability of biogas, and now we can be confident that biogas will continue to be readily available for road transport also in the future. Gasum’s strategic goal is to briskly increase the supply of renewable gas in the Nordic markets and thus enable low-emission transport by land and sea, said Juho Kurra, VP of Transport Finland, Gasum.
During August, Gasum’s filling stations will undergo modification work in which, for example, natural gas price markings will be removed from pylons.
By August 30, 2024, natural gas will be completely removed as a refueling option at the automatic filling stations.
Significant emission reductions
Gasum currently has 45 gas filling stations in Finland, 17 of which also sell liquefied gas. The 46th filling station will open in Rauma in the Autumn and will have liquefied gas as an option.
According to the company, biomethane is a readily available and cost-effective way to reduce transport emissions.
The use of biomethane reduces fuel lifecycle emissions by an average of 90 percent compared to traditional fossil fuels, such as diesel.
Gasum is the largest biomethane producer in the Nordic countries with a total of 17 biogas plants in Finland and Sweden.
Gasum also imports RNG from other European countries and continuously invests in increasing RNG production by building new biogas plants and improving existing ones.
Launch e-methane soon
Soon, Gasum will also offer e-methane, a synthetic and very low-emission gas produced with renewable electricity.
E-methane is suitable for equipment and machinery already running on natural gas, RNG, liquefied natural gas (LNG), or liquefied biomethane (bioLNG).
Gasum’s strategic target is to bring seven terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable gas per year to the Nordic market by 2027, which is four times more than today.
This would mean an annual total emission reduction of 1.8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) for Gasum’s customers.
