St1 opens its first Swedish bioLNG filling station

St1 opens its first Swedish bioLNG filling station
On March 12, 2025, St1 officially opened its first bioLNG refuelling station in Sweden. The event was officiated by Marlene Burwick, Public Affairs Lead, St1, Tommie Ekered, Regional Councillor and Chair of the Committee for Traffic, Infrastructure and Environment, Region Jönköping, and Johan Zakrisson, Interim Head of Value Chain, St1 Biokraft (photo courtesy St1 Biokraft).

Nordic energy major St1, together with its jointly owned subsidiary St1 Biokraft, has hosted the official opening of the Group's first liquefied biomethane refuelling station in Sweden. Located in Torsvik, Jönköping, the investment is part of St1's ambitious plan to establish a Nordic network of biomethane refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, and having 50 stations in operation by 2028.

Nordic energy major St1, together with its jointly owned subsidiary St1 Biokraft, has hosted the official opening of the Group’s first liquefied biomethane refuelling station in Sweden. Located in Torsvik, Jönköping, the investment is part of St1’s ambitious plan to establish a Nordic network of biomethane refuelling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, and having 50 stations in operation by 2028.

St1 is a leader in compressed biomethane (bioCNG in Sweden, and now the company is also introducing liquid biomethane (bioLNG) into its station network to meet the growing demand for sustainable transport solutions for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs).

Through its jointly owned subsidiary St1 Biokraft, the ambition is to scale up availability and investment rate in both the production of bioLNG and its distribution.

The new bioLNG station in Torsvik is located next to the existing Shell filling station – a strategic location as Jönköping is an important node for the heavy-duty transport network.

The inauguration marks a milestone in St1’s ambition to establish a Nordic network of biomethane refuelling stations.

The inauguration of our first Swedish bioLNG station is another milestone in our work to create a sustainable energy system for the transport of the future. We see increased demand for gas-powered vehicles from our customers in transport and logistics who want to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions. Biomethane is a very competitive fuel and a key to reducing emissions from heavy transport, without compromising on performance, said Daniel Wandebäck, Head of Group Sales & Brands at St1.

The St1 Group has a long-term strategy for sustainable energy transition, where investment and development in biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG), is operated through its jointly owned subsidiary, St1 Biokraft.

Currently, St1 Biokraft has twelve operational production and upgrading plants in Sweden, Norway, and South Korea. In addition, it has two plants under construction in Finland and is completing another one in Mönsterås, Sweden.

The bioLNG filling station in Torsvik is St1 Biokraft’s fourth in the Nordics, and a further eleven stations, four of which are in Sweden, are planned to open in the coming year.

I am very proud that we have now opened our first Swedish filling station for liquified biomethane and that we continue to strengthen the network in collaboration with St1. The new station is an important step in making liquid biogas more accessible to our customers and reinforces our commitment to invest in the Swedish biogas market, where we are dedicated to expanding both production and distribution. We have an ambitious goal to supply the Nordic and Northern European market with 6 TWh of biomethane by 2030, which is equivalent to approximately 600 million liters of diesel, said Miika Johansson, CEO of St1 Biokraft.

The project has been partially financed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency through its Klimatklivet (“Climate Step”) program.
