Nordic energy company Gasum Oy has announced that it has opened a new liquefied biomethane (bioLNG) filling station in Ylivieska, in the Ostrobothnia region of Finland exclusively for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs).

One of the world’s largest logistics companies, DSV, uses biogas-powered vehicles in Finland to reduce transport emissions.

Centrally located at the intersection of several important transport routes, the new Ylivieska filling station brings a much-needed addition to the gas refueling network.

The location of the Ylivieska station was chosen based on the needs of the logistics sector, as it is located along several major national transport routes. In addition, there are various freight hubs in the region, such as the terminal of major logistics operator DSV. Gasum has expanded its biogas filling station network in recent years with the idea that the locations of the stations should serve freight traffic on all main routes in the best way possible, said Juho Kurra, Head of Business, Traffic Finland, Gasum.

DSV reduces emissions using biomethane

In 2025, DSV became one of the world’s largest logistics companies when it merged with Schenker. The company has nearly 150,000 employees in more than 90 countries and transports millions of shipments every year.

In Finland, DSV employs 1,800 people in more than 20 locations. The company is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 throughout the value chain, and a key practical means of achieving this goal is the use of alternative fuels, such as biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG).

Gasum’s new filling station in Ylivieska is important for DSV, as next to it we have a terminal, where we will base a new biogas vehicle during the spring. DSV currently has a total of 26 vehicles in Finland that run on liquefied biomethane and three vehicles that run on compressed biomethane. The expansion of the bioLNG distribution network increases the possibilities for emission reductions in the transport sector, said Petteri Nurmi, CEO of DSV Road Oy, DSV’s Finnish road transport company.

Low-emission transportation over long distances

According to Petteri Nurmi, DSV relies on a mix of low and zero-emission technologies, such as bioLNG, to ensure emission reductions can be achieved across operations.

BioLNG can ensure fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction in vehicles where electrification or renewable diesel (HVO) is not an attractive or possible option.

The market share of gas trucks out of all newly registered heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) in Finland was approximately eight percent in 2025. This year, the share is expected to grow even further.

Using biomethane as a fuel can be an effective way for logistics companies to offer low-emission transport over long distances. The filling station network is already extensive in Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

Many Nordic logistics buyers are also interested in the possibility of transporting goods across national borders with low emissions.

Gasum is committed to significantly increasing the supply of biomethane, as demand increases, in both land and sea logistics in the coming years. Gasum invests in both its own biogas and biomethane production and procurement from reliable partners.
