In Norway, Nordic energy company Gasum Oy has announced that, in cooperation with supermarket and distribution chain REMA, it has opened a new filling station for liquefied biomethane (bioLNG) at REMA Distribution Norway AS in Vinterbro, south Oslo.
Open to all LNG-powered heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), the bioLNG filling station is located close to REMA Distribution’s warehouse in Vinterbro, centrally situated by the E6 and E18 motorways south of Oslo.
The station will meet the demand for bioLNG in the area, the location south of Oslo, and proximity to the Oslofjord tunnel is desired by the market.
Gasum has cooperated with REMA, which has made the land for the station available. REMA has a significant number of bioLNG-powered vehicles that collect cargo from the goods warehouse at Vinterbro.
Being able to fill biogas here will save REMA time and reduce the need for extra driving to fill biogas. Although the station is located next to REMA distribution, it is available to everyone.
REMA Distribution will replace all fossil-owned transport capacity by the end of 2026 and all fossil-leased transport capacity by the end of 2030. This establishment is an important step in achieving our goal of climate-neutral transport by 2026 and 2030, respectively. This simplifies logistics for all our employees who drive biogas trucks, and we make it possible for all our hired carriers to fill up at our warehouse easily and efficiently. Our close collaboration and Gasum’s commitment contribute to REMA Distribution operating an increasing number of biogas vehicles. Continued development of biogas infrastructure is crucial to be able to achieve the goal of climate-neutral transport, said Anders Hustoft, Transport Director REMA Distribution Norway.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from road transport
Gasum states that it is witnessing a growing interest in biomethane – also known as renewable natural gas (RNG) – among Norwegian transport companies, as RNG offers a cost-effective alternative to reduce emissions and establish more environmentally friendly operations.
The newly opened filling station at Vinterbro offers bioLNG, which is suitable for HDV operators who wish to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve local air quality immediately without compromising range.
Norway aims to reduce national emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 and 70-75 percent by 2035.
The transport sector accounts for one-third of national fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, of which road transport accounts for approximately 50 percent of these emissions.
We are very pleased that REMA Distribution took the initiative to establish a biogas station at Vinterbro with us. The station is an important contribution to Gasum’s network of filling stations nationwide and locally. Vinterbro is a place with a lot of heavy transport that can now easily use biogas. I am very pleased to see the significant increased interest in biogas among the major logistics players in Norway, which is crucial for cutting emissions in heavy transport to achieve the national climate goals, remarked Jogeir Munkeby, Gasum Sales Manager Traffic Norway.
