France-headed independent LNG and bioLNG solutions provider AXEGAZ Trading & Technologies S.A.S. (AXEGAZ T&T) and global agri-commodities processor Cargill Inc., have announced the transfer of liquefied biomethane (bioLNG) from KN Energies’ Terminal in the Port of Klaipeda, Lithuania, onto one of AVENIR’s small-scale LNG vessels for further distribution as a sustainable bunker fuel in the Baltic region.

According to a statement, AXEGAZ T&T coordinated the operation together with its key partners – LNG Terminal KN Energies, bioLNG provider Cargill, and bunkering vessel operator Avenir LNG MS Ltd (AVENIR) – to ensure safe and compliant handling and transfer of the bioLNG.

This operation marks an important step in the companies’ efforts to expand their operational footprint to include the Baltic, building on their existing presence in Eastern European markets.

Klaipeda is a strategic location

AXEGAZ T&T and Cargill selected Klaipeda as the starting point for their Baltic expansion due to the strategic location, a vibrant LNG market, and the innovative and commercially focused approach of KN Energies.

KN Energies operates the Klaipeda LNG Terminal, a key infrastructure built around the FSRU Independence, providing essential regasification, LNG reloading services enabling both large-scale and small-scale LNG operations.

The Klaipeda LNG Terminal has recently enhanced its capabilities with flexible, forward-looking solutions such as virtual biomethane liquefaction, paving the way for more sustainable LNG solutions.

Another decisive element for the three companies was KN Energies’ dedication to reducing its operational carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint and increasing operational efficiency, demonstrated through an electrification project powered by renewable energy.

Increased demand for low-carbon maritime fuels

The expansion reflects the shared confidence of the trio in the growth potential of LNG and bioLNG in the maritime sector, supported by recent regulatory developments in Europe.

Measures such as the FuelEU Maritime Regulation and the inclusion of shipping in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) are increasing the need for lower-emission fuels that can help operators meet compliance requirements.

BioLNG, in particular, is gaining traction due to its significantly reduced- and in some certified pathways, even negative – carbon intensity.

As an early adopter and leading provider of bioLNG, AXEGAZ T&T says that it is well-positioned to support the implementation of green pooling models such as Cargill’s, enabling efficient access to certified renewable fuels across multiple regions while reducing administrative complexity and compliance risks.

By carrying out this maritime operation, AXEGAZ T&T demonstrated its technical capabilities and its ability to plan and manage activities in new and demanding markets.

The operation also highlights the company’s capacity to handle complex logistics, reflecting both its experience and strategic approach to growth.

To ensure maximum impact, we have been actively coordinating technical and operational efforts across our internal teams, our partners KN Energies, Cargill, and AVENIR, with the support of our local representatives in Lithuania, all of whom we would like to thank. Through close cooperation with major players of the supply chain, we are bringing LNG and bioLNG to new users in the Baltics, NorthWest Europe, and the Mediterranean, commented Brigitte Morriello, Chair of AXEGAZ T&T.
