Copa and Cogeca, an organisation representing EU farmers and their cooperatives welcomed EU Ministers's decision on December 19 to raise the crop-based biofuels cap as a step in the right direction."Biofuels have many advantages in terms of the climate and decarbonizing the transport sector. It is good news that EU Telecommunications, Transport and Energy Ministers agreed on this binding blending obligation on fuel suppliers of at least 14 percent" said Working Party chairman Dietrich Klein.
It is also a positive step that Ministers agreed in their common position, adopted this week, to maintain at 7 percent until 2030, the maximum share for crop-based biofuels used in transport Klein added.
Copa and Cogeca Secretary-General Pekka Pesonen also welcomed the binding 1 percent sub-target for advanced biofuels in 2025 and the 1 percent indicative target increase of renewable energy sources in the heating and cooling sector.
This approach increases the consistency with other policies and with the bio-based economy and climate goals. We nevertheless regret that the common position includes double counting for biofuels derived from waste and residues, Pekka Pesonen said.
