Flying Forest Ltd, a UK startup specializing in the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) projects, has announced that it has "ensured the purchase" of a 26.8-hectare site in Iisalmi, Finland. This land procurement marks a significant step towards establishing the first SAF production facility and biofuels research centre in the region.

According to a statement, the proposed facility in the Soinlahti industrial zone, in Iisalmi municipality is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the Iisalmi community, including the creation of approximately 100 new jobs during its operational phase.

In addition to direct employment, the Flying Forest SAF project would boost local industries by sourcing its sustainable biomass feedstocks entirely from local forests and sawmills, supporting regional forestry and bioeconomy sectors.

Flying Forest aims to use advanced biomass gasification and Fischer Tropsch (FT) processes to produce SAF in this, its first SAF venture, benefiting from a “de-risked value chain from Finland’s abundant forest resources” and “proven biomass-to-fuel technologies.”
