Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of Finland-headed international energy and marine technology group Wärtsilä Oyj, that it will supply has announced Nordic energy company Gasum Oy with biogas upgrading and liquefaction solutions for a new bioLNG plant in Sweden.
The new plant will produce high-quality liquefied biomethane (bioLNG) from agricultural and organic household waste.
When operational, the Wärtsilä offering will be capable of producing 25 tonnes of bioLNG per day by upgrading biogas to high-quality biomethane aka renewable natural gas (RNG) before it is liquefied at minus 160 °C.
This new plant is an important part of fulfilling our ambitious goal of bringing 7 TWh worth of renewable gas annually to the Nordic market. We are happy to continue our cooperation with Wärtsilä in this second big greenfield biogas plant investment project in Sweden, said Eero Lallukka, Senior Manager of procurement at Gasum.
In addition to the biogas upgrading and liquefaction systems, the Wärtsilä Gas Solutions scope of supply includes a 200 m3 storage tank and an export and filling station.
The delivery includes preparation for a future system expansion and the possible installation of a second liquefaction unit.
The solution is almost identical to Gasum’s Götene plant, which Wärtsilä is currently delivering and will be started up later this year.
The decarbonization of customer operations is at the front and centre of Wärtsilä’s strategy. Our biogas upgrading and liquefaction solutions are a central pillar of this commitment, and we are delighted to continue our support of Gasum, commented Rolf Håkansson, Sales Manager Biogas, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions.
The new plant will be commissioned for commercial production at the beginning of 2026.
