The Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) has opened a call for papers for its 2025 Youth Award. For the 2025 edition, the selected awardee will have the opportunity to present their research during a special session at the 12th GBEP Bioenergy Week, taking place in Kampala, Uganda from July 7–11, 2025.
Initiated in response to the Gleneagles Plan of Action in 2005 by the G8 +5 countries, the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) is hosted at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.
GBEP’s mission is to “support wider, cost-effective biomass and biofuels deployment, particularly in developing countries where biomass use is prevalent”, and the partnership focuses on sustainable development, climate change mitigation, and food and energy security.

The GBEP Youth Award seeks to recognize and promote outstanding research in the field of bioenergy conducted by students and early-career researchers.
This award focuses on diverse areas including environmental, social, and economic sustainability, circular bioeconomy, bioenergy technologies, supply chain logistics, policy development, societal practices, and addressing climate change.
For the 2025 edition, the selected awardee will have the opportunity to present their research during a special session at the 12th GBEP Bioenergy Week in Kampala, Uganda from July 7–11, 2025.
The awardee will also receive their award certificate and have the opportunity to present their work at other relevant international events co-organized by GBEP throughout 2025.
Focus on Africa
This year, the 2025 Youth Award is focused exclusively on Africa. Africa is a continent brimming with potential for bioenergy solutions that can transform lives and communities.
The GBEP Youth Award is assigned in the context of the GBEP Bioenergy Weeks, held annually in a different region of the world.
The 2025 GBEP Bioenergy Week will take place on July 7–11, 2025, in Kampala, Uganda—a country with increasing bioenergy potential.
Therefore, the 2025 GBEP Youth Award is open solely to students or early-career researchers from African universities, showcasing the talents and contributions of young people on the continent.
