HRS start work on £35 million Tansterne biomass power plant

UK-headed Heat Recovery Solutions Ltd (HRS) have announced that it has begun site preparation works on the 22 MWe Tansterne Biomass Plant project that is to be built in Tansterne, in the East Riding, Hull, UK. Being developed together with fabrication engineers CF Struthers Ltd, the GBP 35 million (≈ EUR 38.24 million) project is estimated to operational by the end of March 2017.

According to a statement, the biomass power plant will use combustion, heat recovery and power module technology developed by HRS subsidiary HRS Energy Ltd which will be manufactured in Hull by project partner CF Struthers ensuring a local supply chain to “minimise costs and emissions and maximise local benefit”.

Our pioneering technology is the best available for this development, delivering cost and efficiency benefits while producing low levels of emissions. Thanks to our efficient standardised modular design, the plant will be operational and generating electricity for homes and businesses in just over a year. We are looking forward to building on this success, and developing our market-leading technology for projects across the country and worldwide, said Mark Wickham Managing Director HRS Energy.

The site is owned by project partner and financier Solar 21, an Ireland-headed renewable energy investment company that specialises in the acquisition and management of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations and in the development of biomass and biogas projects in Europe.

The plant will use over 16 tonnes an hour of imported waste wood as fuel with one week’s fuel supply on hand. The project is eligible for a subsidy from the UK government under the Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROC’s) scheme.
