Japanese consortium to develop 75 MW biopower plant in Aichi

In Japan, industry conglomerate Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni) has announced that it via its wholly-owned subsidiary Marubeni Clean Power Corporation (MCPC) together with compatriots JAG Energy Co., Ltd (JKE) and Osaka Gas Co., Ltd (Osaka Gas) have established a special purpose company, Aichi Tahara Biomass Power Plant G.K. to develop a wood-based power plant, Aichi Tahara Biomass Power Plant, in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture.

According to a statement, this project will cover the construction and operation of a wood-based dedicated biomass power plant with a power generation output of 75MW in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture, and the sale of the generated electricity.

MCPC and JKE will each have a 37.5 percent stake while Osaka Gas the remaining 25 percent in the project

The planned start of power plant operations is October 2024, subject to the “understanding and cooperation” of the local population and other related parties.

Japan is a forest rich nation with an around 25 million hectare (ha) estate. However, annual harvesting volumes are only one-sixth of annual increment due to steep terrain and a lack of forest road infrastructure that make domestic roundwood expensive compared to imports. Japan joined PEFC in 2014 and its Sustainable Green Ecosystem Council (SGEC) national forest certification system was endorsed by PEFC International in June 2016.
