BioBusiness Arena, a cluster of forest-based organisations in northern Sweden dedicated to promoting innovation in sustainable products and services has announced that it has been granted SEK 3 million (≈ EUR 307 000) by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket), a government agency under the Ministry of Enterprise and Innovation for continued funding of its “Paper to replace plastic” project.
Scientists in wood and cellulose at Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitet) have managed to produce a paper material that has similar properties to plastic. The material is resistant to moisture, which allows renewable products to replace plastic products.
According to a statement, the financing enables further development of the region’s world-leading wood research. The focus of the project is on replacing oil-based plastic products with the newly developed material, paper with plastic properties.
The financing decision means that BioBusiness Arena and Åkroken Science Park, in collaboration with the Mid Sweden University Fiber Science and Communication Network (FSCN) research centre will now be able to now to continue work on the future bioeconomy by developing products such as cups, waterproof paper packages and paper yarns.
