The project, which began in 2018, converts the residual organic matter from sugarcane processing into sugar and ethanol into biogas using anaerobic digestion (AD). This includes press filter cake  – a residue from the sugarcane juice purification process – and vinasse – the remaining water from the distillation process.

The new biogas power unit in Guariba is estimated to supply up to 138 GWh per annum of electricity, enough to supply the city of Araraquara.

According to Raízen, the plant directly contributes to the environment by reusing industrial waste and creating sustainable products that help clean the Brazilian energy matrix, consolidating the company’s strategy in the renewable energy growth market.
