Finland-headed forest industry and energy technology provider Valmet Oyj has announced that it will rebuild the feedstock pretreatment system for RE Energy’s biorefinery in Kalundborg, Denmark. Established in 2020, RE Energy ApS is wholly owned by Karsten REE Holding ApS that acquired the former Inbicon demonstration biorefinery in Kalundborg in April 2020 and will bring the biorefinery back into operation and operate the facility.
RE Energy acquired the old biorefinery with the clear intention to bring it back into operation. This includes replacing the pretreatment system to achieve stable operation. We have great expectations that we, through the corporation and with the Valmet team and their technology, will achieve this goal, said Henrik Maimann, CEO of RE Energy.
Based on straw, RE Energy’s biorefinery will produce cellulosic bioethanol (aka 2nd generation ethanol), and lignin, and, in collaboration with a partner, utilize the hemicellulose to produce new innovative ingredients.
Valmet will replace the old feeding system of the plant with a new biomass feeding system based on Valmet’s patented Force feed technology and a new steam explosion unit. The plant will be able to handle five tonnes bone dry wheat straw per hour, which is approximately six tonnes of straw per hour at 20 percent moisture content.
Delivery of the order, the value of which is undisclosed is planned for the first half of 2022.
We are very happy that RE Energy is investing in the Kalundborg plant and that they have chosen Valmet as the supplier. RE Energy has a very interesting project coming up and the future looks promising with their new and interesting products, said Tomas Jonsson, Sales manager, Biomass Conversion Technology Unit, Valmet.
