In August 2022, Finland-headed energy firm St1 Nordic Oy announced that it had made an investment decision to construct a biogas upgrading and liquefaction plant in Sweden, at Sobacken Energy and Environment Centre in Borås.
Owned and operated by municipality-owned waste management and energy company Borås Energi och Miljö AB, the Sobacken Energy and Environment Centre is an integrated wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant that was officially opened in September 2019.
A prerequisite for the investment decision is a long-term off-take contract to buy raw biogas, which St1 has signed with municipal energy utility Borås Energi och Miljö.
Wärtsilä has been selected to supply the biogas upgrading and liquefaction solution for the project which is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2023.
St1 is committed to enhancing the production of sustainable energy and biogas will play an increasingly important role in this. We already operate Wärtsilä’s biogas upgrading in Sweden and are happy to continue cooperation with the new liquefaction project, said Matti Oksanen, Director of St1’s Gas Business.
A first-of-its-kind
The plant will take biogas from municipal waste and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), and upgrade it into bioLNG.
According to Wärtsilä, it will be the first installation of its kind capable of producing both bioLNG and biomethane simultaneously, and when fully operational, it will be capable of producing 10 tonnes of bioLNG per day.
Wärtsilä continues to lead the field in the transition to carbon-neutral energy solutions. Our depth of experience and expertise in biogas upgrading technologies is unmatched in the industry, and our mixed refrigerant technology is extremely reliable whilst offering the lowest operating costs for liquefying biogas. We are proud to have once again been selected by St1 since it represents a clear endorsement of customer satisfaction, commented Rolf Håkansson, Sales, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, Biogas Solutions.
In addition to the equipment, Wärtsilä will also support the facility with a spare parts package and a service agreement. The value of the order package has not been disclosed.
The project has been granted Climate Step (Klimatklivet) support, a Swedish investment program aimed at projects that reduce climate impact administered by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
