Germany-headed biogas technology provider Weltec Biopower GmbH has revealed that it is nearing the completion of three anaerobic digestion (AD) plants in Northern Ireland. All three 500-kW plants are due to go live in the summer of 2018. Two of them are being set up in County Antrim whereas the third is being built in Benburb in County Tyrone.

At face value, the three new 500-kW plants look similar and all will use slurry and pig, cattle and poultry manure as well as a small amount of other organic feedstocks. However, according to the company, each plant is based on an individual concept as the substrate composition and retention times vary.
For example, one of the plants in County Antrim will only have a single 2 625 m³ stainless-steel digester whereas the other plant, which is located nearby, will use two 2 625 m³ digesters. The plant in County Tyrone will use a slightly larger stainless-steel digester in order to extract as much energy as possible from the substrates.
Once completed, the company will account almost 23 percent of all biogas plants in Northern Ireland, nine out of 40 plants in Northern Ireland. In recognition of this strong overseas commitment, the company recently qualified for the second place in the ranking of the German Foreign Trade Award.
The strong market position of Weltec in the United Kingdom has a solid basis. From the outset, the company has played a key role in the field of AD plant construction. Apart from the excellent performance, our plants’ impress operators with their outstanding return on investment, said Kevin Monson, UK Sales Manager.
