Biogen expands network with Tamar Energy acquisition

One of the UK's largest biowaste processors and biogas plant operators Biogen (UK) Ltd has just got signifcantly bigger – through the acquisition of Tamar Energy Ltd, one of the largest anaerobic digestion (AD) owners and operators in the country. The acquisition was completed by Ancala Partners LLP, the independent mid-market infrastructure investment manager for an undisclosed sum.

According to a statement, a number of Tamar Energy’s existing shareholders that have rolled-over their investment into the combined group and the deal creates one of the largest independent AD operators in the UK.

We believe that there is a strong strategic fit between Biogen and Tamar which will enable the enlarged group to deliver significant benefits for existing clients and stakeholders, commented Magnus Goodlad, Chairman, Tamar Energy.

The combined group operates a network of thirteen AD plants and six composting sites located across England, Scotland and Wales that “provide cost-effective, low carbon, food and organic waste management solutions”.

Acquiring Tamar Energy represents an opportunity for us to grow our platform and create one of the largest AD operators in the UK. The combination enables us to improve our service to all stakeholders, including customers and local communities, commented Spence Clunie, Managing Partner, Ancala Partners LLP.

Working with supermarkets, the hospitality industry, food manufacturers and local authorities across the UK, the AD sites recycle over half a million tonnes of food waste annually and have a combined installed electric capacity of 25 MW.
