Finland-headed marine- and energy engineering and technology major Wärtsilä Oyj has announced that it has been selected to supply a biogas upgrading and liquefaction in a single turnkey solution to Latvia.
The order the value of which has not been disclosed was placed by AS Agrofirma Tervete, who will utilize the plant to upgrade, polish, and liquefy biogas produced from agricultural waste into bioLNG at its facility in Tervete.
Wärtsilä will provide its Puregas CA50LBG for the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) followed by an MR10 (mixed refrigerant) technology for the liquefaction stage.
Prior to making the contract decision, we carried out extensive research and comparisons of the biogas upgrading technologies currently available. The energy efficiency, methane recovery rate, and the high content in the product gas were the key factors in selecting Wärtsilä, said Endijs Drebeiniks from Agrofirma Tervete.
The installation is designed for the production of 10 tonnes of bioLNG per day. The delivery also covers the supply of spare parts and service agreement.

Reliable and low OPEX
Wärtsilä’s Puregas CA50 LBG process recovers more than 99.9 percent of the biomethane present in raw biogas by separating CO2 from the biogas through chemical absorption.
Furthermore, the company says that its mixed refrigerant technology is “extremely reliable and offers the lowest operating costs for liquefying biogas.”
The plant is expected to become fully operational by the end of 2023.
