Dutch biogas plant awarded ISCC certification
Netherlands-based bioenergy technology specialists HoSt has announced that its Wabico biogas-to-biomethane facility in Waalwijk, the Netherlands has been awarded International Sustainability and Carbon Certificate (ISCC) certification.
This certification confirms that Wabico meets high ecological and sustainability requirements in the whole process of producing bioenergy from biomass, said Marcel te Braak, Technical Director of HoSt, the turn-key supplier and operator of the Wabico plant.
According to HoSt, the ISCC EU, which is recognized by the European Commission under the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED), is moreover proof of Wabico’s compliance with stringent EU requirements on traceability of origin of the entire supply chain, sustainable biomass production and the greenhouse gas (GHG) savings in comparison to fossil fuels.
Advanced biogas facility
Built and operated by HoSt in the Netherlands, the Wabico Waalwijkse Biomass Combination (Wabico) plant processes around 50 000 tonnes per annum of various waste streams like roadside grass, vegetable waste, flotation sludges and unpacked supermarket food waste. The capacity of the plant is 850 m³/h biogas that is upgraded to 500 m³/h biomethane and injected into the grid.
Commissioned in 2015, the combination of different innovative techniques deployed to manage the feedstock variety makes Wabico one of the most advanced biogas plants in the world. For instance, the biogas upgrading has an integrated heat recovery system so that no gas is needed as fuel to provide heat for the digester. The dewatered digestate is used as soil improvement medium whereas the water is treated before discharge to the public sewer system.
The plant is located at the ‘Ecopark’ in Waalwijk, Netherlands. The Ecopark is a unique initiative for sustainable energy in the Netherlands and is one of the largest Ecopark’s in the country. Three types of large-scale renewable energy installations are operated within the park: solar energy, wind energy and biogas.
Although the plant is commercially operated, it is also used for research and development of new and more sustainable anaerobic digestion (AD) technologies and optimisation of existing ones. The project is constantly developing and contributing to the development of the AD industry.
