In Sweden, biogas plant and renewable natural gas (RNG) developer Biokraft International AB (Biokraft) formerly known as Scandinavian Biogas Fuels International AB, has announced a major milestone when the newly built RNG liquefaction plant, connected to its biogas plant in Södertörn, Stockholm delivered its first batch of bioLNG.

The shipment consisted of 34 tonnes of bioLNG to be used by heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) in northern Europe. A filled container holds 17 tonnes of bioLNG which is enough for fossil-free driving with a fully loaded long-haul truck for approximately 50 000 kilometers.
One of Europe’s largest bioLNG installations
Biokraft’s biogas is 100 percent fossil-free and produced by digesting collected food- and slaughterhouse waste collected from municipalities in the Greater Stockholm area.
The biogas is then upgraded to biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG), and was previously supplied to filling stations as compressed biomethane (bioCNG).
The newly built liquefaction plant is located directly adjacent to the digesters in Södertörn and liquefies the biomethane through cooling.
The liquefaction unit has an annual production capacity of 220 GWh or 50 tonnes of bioLNG per day, making it one of Europe’s largest bioLNG installations.
Strategic investment
For Biokraft International, bioLNG production significantly broadens the potential market compared to bioCNG by enabling access to HDVs, shipping, and industry thanks to liquefaction.
BioLNG has a high energy content per unit volume and can be transported long distances at a reasonable cost to meet a strong demand in Northern Europe.
The launch of Stockholm bioLNG is a major strategic milestone and strengthens our market position as one of Europe’s leading bioLNG producers in the Northern European market. The project also shows that, in line with our strategic growth plan, we have the competence and capacity to build and operate large-scale biogas plants, said Matti Vikkula, CEO of Biokraft International.
The Stockholm bioLNG project started two years ago. The investment is approximately SEK 330 million (≈ EUR 27.75 million) and has been financed with equity, bond loans, and government investment support via the “Climate Step” (Klimatklivet) program.
It has been exciting to lead this project, which, despite challenges, was completed reasonably according to plan. I am incredibly proud of the engineering created by the entire team and in collaboration with our suppliers and partners, said Jean Collin, Senior Project Director at Biokraft International.
The Södertörn bioLNG project will be in the commissioning phase for some months while production is scaled, and functions and delivery parameters are tested.
The company expects the facility to be transferred into regular production towards the end of this year.
