Norway-headed resource management and trading company Geminor AS has announced that Bøn Biobrensel AS, a Geminor-owned company, has achieved Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP) Producer certification. The certification enables Bøn Biobrensel to bring qualifying biomass from Norwegian contractors and forest owners into certified supply chains, opening access to buyers that require documented compliance with EU sustainability criteria.

The certification includes the SBP EU RED scheme and was issued following an audit by Preferred by Nature.

It covers woodchip production at four storage sites in Norway, with feedstock ranging from forestry and sawmill residues to material from road verges, infrastructure and urban areas, as well as garden waste.

Meeting new market requirements

Under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), biomass used in the EU must meet stricter sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) requirements, increasing the need for documented compliance throughout the supply chain.

The SBP EU RED scheme provides a recognised framework for demonstrating that qualifying biomass meets these requirements. Bøn Biobrensel guides suppliers through each process step.

Suppliers provide a declaration of origin with each delivery, while Bøn Biobrensel offers practical support and handles the more complex work, including risk assessments, origin checks and the sustainability data required further along the supply chain.

Many smaller contractors risk losing access to buyers because they lack the resources to handle the documentation. Through our certified supply chain, they can keep serving these markets, explained Johan Olö, Managing Director of Bøn Biobrensel.

Expanding the certified biomass value chain

According to the company, SBP certification is part of a broader push into biomass for Geminor, an area where the company has recently strengthened its team through several new hires.

Geminor is now working towards trader with storage certification in Denmark and Finland as the next step in developing its Nordic biomass operations.

Documentation and compliance have become as important as the physical product. Geminor has extensive experience managing complex documentation requirements in the waste sector, and we are now applying that expertise to biomass sustainability. This allows us to handle more challenging fractions and connect compliant supply with buyers across the Nordic and European markets, said Victor Smith, Business Development Manager Biomass, Geminor.
