Danish biomass and waste combustion technology specialists Linka Group has recently announced that Jernforsen Energy AB, part of Linka Group has completed a biomass boiler plant upgrade for VIDA Nössemark AB, a sawmill belonging to Swedish forest industry group VIDA AB, a subsidiary of Canada-headed forest industry major Canfor Corporation (Canfor).

On the border between Sweden and Norway is the village of Nössemark where VIDA Nössemark AB operates a sawmill specialized in producing planed structural timber (studs) for overseas construction markets in the United Kingdom (UK), the United States (US), Australia, and Asia.
The boiler for the new heat plant is 5 MW and optimized to handle efficient combustion of “wet” biomass such as bark, a residue from the sawmill that typically has a moisture content (MC) of up to 60 percent. The entire plant, including a new boiler house, has been developed and delivered by Jernforsen Energy, part of Linka Group.
In addition, the existing silo for bark and woodchips has been renovated, modernized, and connected to the new boiler, which provides heat for the premises as well as for the dry kilns.
It is stable, simple, and reliable. For us, the most important thing has been to keep the schedule and get the facility we need. That is why we chose Jernforsen again and have received really good support when there have been challenges with managing the system, said Jonas Axelsson, Technical Manager at VIDA.
Well-known brand
Jernforsen is a Swedish boiler brand and company that VIDA knows well from its other sawmills – VIDA currently has Jernforsen boilers installed at 10 of its 12 Swedish sawmills, and they are designed to utilize production residues yielding between 8 and 10 MW of heat.
According to Linka, Jernforsen’s technology makes it easy for the sawmills to recover energy from wet bark and fresh woodchips with dust and emissions well below statutory limits.
For sawmills, it is important to be able to make the best possible use of their waste products. That is why we have done a lot to optimize and automate this type of plant, which runs stably in even the harsh environment on the border to Norway. Economically attractive energy plants with a focus on return on investment are not only a hit in Denmark, said Linka Group in a statement.
