In the Netherlands, international waste-to-product company Renewi plc, liquefaction technology developers Nordsol, and global energy major Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) have formed a strategic partnership to jointly produce liquefied biomethane (bioLNG) locally at a biogas plant. This collaboration aims to contribute to the circular economy and completes the cycle of turning organic waste into a sustainable fuel for transport.

UK-headed Renewi handles some 14 million tonnes of waste annually of which 89 percent is either recycled or used for energy recovery. In the Netherlands, Renewi collects organic waste from multiple industries including retail and catering, nationwide, and converts it into biogas.
It’s great to see this collaboration of partners come together to deliver tangible results towards a more sustainable society. This aligns with our vision of waste no more and is in line with our drive to take the lead in creating secondary raw materials and to be the connecting link within the circular economy, said Otto de Bont, CEO of Renewi.
Part of this biogas will be delivered to Nordsol for the production of bioLNG. A privately -held company, Nordsol has integrated and optimized proven processes into a compact installation that is able to convert biogas into bioLNG. Its proprietary technology makes it possible to produce bioLNG locally at “an affordable” price point.
Our bioLNG is a clean and safe fuel at an affordable price point. This collaboration is a significant first step to making bioLNG a mainstream fuel in the Netherlands. With our partners, we offer a valuable alternative to green gas, said Jerom van Roosmalen, CEO of Nordsol.
Shell, a minority investor in Nordsol through Shell Ventures, will distribute the bioLNG to nearby Shell LNG stations to supply customers with bioLNG and help them reduce their carbon footprint. Renewi, Nordsol, and Shell have signed an agreement to build a Nordsol plant at a Renewi site. The plant is expected to produce the first bioLNG by mid next year.
Over the past 10 years, we have set up a network of seven LNG stations in the Netherlands to enable our customers to reduce their CO2 emissions with LNG trucks. By gradually replacing LNG with bioLNG, we are taking a big step towards emission-free transport. Bold collaborations such as this one will lead to the necessary innovations society needs, said Hilmar van den Dool, General Manager of Shell Retail.
