Finland-headed oil refiner and developer of non-food, waste- and residue-based ethanol production St1 Oy has announced that it is investing EUR 40 million in a hydrogen production unit which is to be built at its refinery in Gothenburg, Sweden. This is the first step in the series of planned investments, which will enable St1 Refinery to start
the production of renewable diesel in 2020.

The construction work of the new hydrogen unit will start immediately and is estimated to be completed by the end of 2018. The hydrogen unit investment project targets to enable a 200 000 tonne per annum capacity of renewable diesel production. The value of the first stage of the project is EUR 40 million.
St1 continues also to develop new advanced ethanol production technologies with a strong focus on ligno-cellulosic feedstocks. In Kajaani Finland, the first Cellunolix plant to manufacture advanced ethanol from sawdust targets to reach full production speed during 2017.
