Sweden-headed automaker Volvo Cars Group part of China-headed Zhejiang Geely Holdings has approved the use of HVO100 renewable diesel by Volvo car owners in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark for all models from the SPA and CMA platforms from 2015 onwards that have Volvo's own four-cylinder diesel engine.
In May 2018, Volvo Cars initiated an HVO100 fuel usage project together with Taxi Göteborg and about one hundred cars, mainly Volvo V90 with the diesel engines D3 and D4. In October, the project was expanded to include all taxi companies in Sweden that operated Volvo S90 and Volvo V90 from model year 18 onwards and the Volvo V60 from model year 19 onwards with the motors D3, D4, and D5.
We are delighted with the good results from the tests with taxi fleets in Sweden. Therefore we can permit the use of HVO100 fuel for private and company car customers, said Mats Andersson, Vice President, Propulsion Power Systems at Volvo Cars.
The models that are now approved for refueling with HVO100, a 100 percent renewable diesel with no fossil molecules approved according to the European fuel standard for paraffinic diesel EN15940, are the SPA and CMA cars XC90 from 2015, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country from 2016 onwards, XC60 from 2017, V60, V60 Cross Country from 2018 onwards and XC40 from 2018 onwards which have Volvo Cars own four-cylinder diesel engine.
No conversions or adjustments are required. The XC90 was the first car out of the SPA platform and it came in 2015.
We consider it very positive that we can now offer the customers who have a diesel-powered Volvo car among the current models to be able to refuel a fossil-free alternative. These cars have a fuel system adapted to the slightly different characteristics of the HVO100 fuel, said Mats Andersson.
Volvo stresses that HVO blends of up to 49 percent available in Sweden is an approved fuel for all diesel-powered Volvo cars.
